There are numerous types of construction equipment used on job sites, and every type works together to form a complete construction system. Each type of construction equipment has specific functions that are critical to creating the same outcome (e.g., grading the land and creating subgrades).
Each machine has a supportive function for others, for example, disposing of dirt via wheel loaders and taking bulk material via articulated dump trucks and transporting it to where it will ultimately be used; hoisting materials up to building height using mobile cranes or tower cranes, placing them into position with concrete pumps, using mixers and placing booms to place the concrete into any shape, and then finally, finishing the surface of the concrete using a motor grader and compactors and providing access using aerial work platforms and telehandlers.
The new generation of equipment includes increasingly sophisticated machine control systems that utilize 2D, 3D, GNSS, and total stations as well as telematics (real-time equipment monitoring). The latest machines are equipped with operator-assist systems that aid operators in command and control of their equipment.
